“For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety. Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person” (Proverbs 24:6-8).
“For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war,” we need good counselors. If you are going to make war against the Devil you had better know the Lord, the Bible, your pastor, and good spiritual Christians. Those are the four best counselors you can come up with. 1) The Lord. Spend time in prayer and yield to the Holy Spirit. 2) The Bible. It’s the battle plan and it reveals the enemy. 3) Your pastor. He is the shepherd of the flock. 4) Solidly spiritual and committed Christians, for a multitude of counselors.
“For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
Some sheep that have been down the road know how to give some pretty good spiritual advice. The fact that they are still going strong and haven’t been eaten up by the wolves show that there is some wisdom in what they say. In this they are certainly known by their fruits. Spiritual Christians will seek out other spiritual Christians. Guess who carnal Christians seek out? Well, other carnal Christians or their unsaved friends out in the world.
Some strong Christians are known by their wounds, as well. They have mixed it up with the Devil a time or two and they came out of it the victor. Those are the folks you want to be talking to about spiritual warfare. They’ve mixed it up with the wolves, but they stayed close to the shepherd. And the shepherd stays close to the Chief Shepherd.
“Wisdom is too high for a fool,” he can’t understand it. He can’t attain unto it: “A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth” (Proverbs 14:6). The reason a scorner can’t find godly wisdom is because his heart is not right, his spirit isn’t right, and he isn’t in a right relationship with God. It is too high for him.
“. . . he openeth not his mouth in the gate,” in the Old Testament days, the gate was the place where the city fathers gathered to conduct business. Since that is where the wise men of the city sat, the fool would desire to have no part with them. He isn’t interested in speaking to men of wisdom. The problem with the fool is that he would prefer to run around with other fools, and the only reason he would have to appear before the men at the gate is to stand in judgment of them for some wrongdoing he has committed.
The fool won’t seek counsel from the right places: “He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.” He is full of mischief. And when the Bible speaks of mischief, it is talking about evil, so he is full of evil.
