The 62-year-old mother of five and the wife of a pastor is facing six years in prison on charges of “ethnic agitation”. In 2004, she authored a booklet on sexual ethics describing marriage as union between one man and one woman. She also made this point on a 2019 radio show, and in her Twitter messages, condemning support for gay pride parades and same-sex marriages by some Evangelical Lutheran pastors.
Päivi Räsänen was interrogated by police for 13 hours. “I do not consider myself guilty of threatening, slandering, or insulting anyone,” she said. “My statements were all based on the Bible’s teachings on marriage and sexuality.”
