Large-scale restoration work at the famous flooded bell tower in Kalyazin, Russia, has been completed, and the internationally-known site is now open to the public.

“The bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral is known far beyond the borders of Russia. This object is interesting for tourists and historians, a significant symbol of the spiritual heritage of the Tver Province. It’s important to preserve this unique structure for future generations,” Tver Governor Igor Rudenya said while inspecting the site in May, reports the Tver administration.

The restoration project won the All-Russian Competition for the Best Projects for Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment in Small Towns and Historical Settlements in 2020, for which the municipality received a federal grant of $680,000 (50 million rubles).

During the restoration, the foundation and walls of the bell tower were strengthened, and the brickwork, facades, truss system, roof, floors and stairs were updated. Work on the coastline and the pier have made it easier to visit the bell tower. The cobblestone path on the main bank down to the bell tower was repaired, and the outdoor lighting was replaced. The clock and cross were also restored.

I know when I think about “Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment”, a clock tower far away in a body of water is what comes to mind.

It’s quite beautiful — I wonder how much restoring something like this would cost in the US — certainly not $680,000!
