“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:5-6).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:5-6).

“Every word of God is pure,” verse six, “add thou not unto his words”–individual words.

Let’s look at a few passages, beginning with Job 23, “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (verse 12).

Job spoke these words when he was in the midst of the greatest trial of his life. You should be able to read the Bible before you eat breakfast in the morning, but if you don't, that's fine, but Job esteemed the words of his mouth more than his necessary food.

Look, this is important. This is not just some cranked-up soapbox. This is something that's important. God gave you a treasure. God gave you the words of the living God to hold in your laps. Men by the hundreds of thousands—by the millions, and women (by the way) have shed their blood in agony so you could have those words in your lap. This is important. This is not some latter-day soapbox by a bunch of wacko rednecks that don't have an education, okay? This is one of the most important things you can ever defend. “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”

“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:1-5).

This all begins back in verse one, “If thou wilt receive my words.” If you don't receive the words you're going to get way off track before you get two more verses down the line. Doesn’t that makes sense?

“He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth . . . My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart” (Proverbs 4:4-5, 20, 21).

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
