“Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer. Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house” (Proverbs 24:26-27).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer. Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house” (Proverbs 24:26-27).

I really hope that the first part of that verse is allegorical! I’ll take that as metaphorical; however, you should note that that is the only place in the Bible at the end of the verse where the words “right answer” show up.

There are “right answers”, and if you know the Bible you have the right answers. Amen? And usually the right answers are not that hard. They are just not that hard to get at.

“Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house”

This is good general advice. If you happen to move to the prairie somewhere, its probably a good idea to get the fields in order, plant a good crop and let it yield its harvest so that you can see for sure whether the field will be able to support you once you build your house and raise your family. But there is also a practical application. There are “first things first.”

I don’t know how good an idea it is to get married and then go, like so many other couples over the past few years have done, buy a $100-150,000 house before you are even established or even sure what you are going to do with your life. There are some things where first things come first. I know that there are certain things in the economy which make certain things possible at times, when other things don’t: but in general, get the field in order so that you know the field is going to support what you plan to do. Get a good paying job and establish yourself there. You certainly don’t want the prospect of not keeping your job to hit you with a $2,000 monthly house payment and what other bills coming due which will wipe you out for years. Then build your house and establish yourself there. There is nothing wrong with renting until that happens.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
