“He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets” (Proverbs 22:11-13).
The indication there is that if you have true knowledge, and if you're doing right; then the Lord upholds you and the truth that you are speaking and preserves you. The passage goes on to say, “and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor,” that is somebody doing wrong. The Lord comes in and short circuits what that guy is doing.
I don't know how you are; but I don't need my blessings cursed, and I don't need everything I'm trying to do short-circuited, right? If I read this right, if I’m not doing right; then the Lord moves in and disrupts what I'm trying to do. None of us need that.
Verse 13 says, “The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.” Again, we are talking about what comes out of the lips. We were talking about the scorner in verse 10, we were talking about the words of a transgressor in verse 12, and now you have a slothful man who we can study a little bit and this slothful man is saying certain things.
The slothful man says that there is a lion outside, and he shall be slain in the streets. Now, even in Palestine, how many lions actually roam the streets? In the average city, probably not too many. This guy is seeing excuses. He is making up excuses out of nothing. Have you ever met somebody like that? They are not doing right. They are not even interested in doing right, They are not interested in doing anything, and any excuse will do, right?
Most of us have played that game before at one time or another. Any excuse will do. In fact, a popular gospel song pretty much hit the nail on the head.
