Pope Francis: Halving of Jesuit Numbers Worldwide Is a Lesson in Humility

In a private meeting with Jesuits earlier this month, Pope Francis said that a sharp decline in the prominent religious order’s membership is an opportunity to learn humility.

“One thing that calls for attention is the diminution of the Society. When I entered the novitiate, we were 33,000 Jesuits. How many are there now? More or less half,” the pope said during a private meeting with Jesuits in Athens, Greece, on Dec. 4.

His comments were published on Thursday in the Jesuit-run journal La Civiltà Cattolica.

“What does the Lord mean by this? Humble yourself, humble yourself! I don’t know if I have explained myself,” said Francis, the first Jesuit pope. “We have to get used to humiliation.”

Data published in 2018 by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) in Washington, D.C., showed that the number of Jesuits had declined by more than half since 1965.

At its peak 56 years ago, there were 36,000 Jesuits worldwide. In 2017, that number had fallen to 15,842, CARA reported. But the Jesuits remain the world’s largest male religious order.

The pope is to Christianity as Phanos is to the Marvel universe.

No Bergoglio the jesuits die because they have become you and the likes of James Martin.

God has no room in his Inn for Jesuits.

Forget the Jesuits, how many Catholics have you run off? Probably half. See a pattern there?

With the 2020 figures, the Jesuits are down just over 58%. The Dominicans 44%.

Only God can count Franciscans.

The Oratorians, in the same period, are up 2%.

In a private meeting with Jesuits earlier this month, Pope Francis said that a sharp decline in the prominent religious order’s membership is an opportunity to learn humility.

Rather, it's an opportunity to learn reality: the Jesuits are no longer Catholic, no thanks to the first Jesuit pope.

Jesuits are fading out because they have been arrogant and don’t know the difference between humility and humiliation, as the idiot pope just illustrated. Only a couple thousand left in the US. St. Ignatius would be fuming in his grave to see what his society has become.

“We have to get used to humiliation.”

Really don’t like his choice of words. One thing to remain humble. Quite different to become acclimated to humiliation.

God generally blesses people with one stand-out talent that everyone comments on. Generally. There are exceptions to that rule. Pope Francis comes to mind.

IT MEANS GET OUT OF TOWN, FRANK, YOU AIN’T NO POPE.

And good riddance.

Great to learn the Jusuits are diminishing.

I don’t think Frank is what Loyala had in mind.

And they were once the equivalent of Super Bowl winners.

The Jesuits embraced Communism and tried to bastardize Catholicism. The number of Jesuits declined as potential recruits asked themselves, “why become a Communist in a Jesuit frock when I can just be a Communist?”

Maybe the next Pope will bring the number of Jesuits down to zero? There’s historical precedent. The order was previously abolished and later brought back.

A Jesuit pseudo-scholar looks at a collapse like this and says, "The Lord is teaching us humility."

A competent administrative leader would look at it and say, "We've done something terribly wrong, and we need to fix it."
