“A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool” (Proverbs 17:10).
Do you know what reproof means? We hear about how reproofs and instructions are a way of life, right? Why are we here for? Why do you read these short devotionals every morning? I would hope that we're here to learn the Bible and all that. To be instructed and taught the Bible; but there is a reproof involved with that and do you know what the definition of a reproof is?
It is blame. It is censure. In other words, it is somebody standing up and saying you are wrong and you are to blame for some particular thing. That is almost entirely missing in Christianity these days.
Do you know who's responsible for your problems? Mostly you are. By and large, you are the main issue with your problems. I understand sometimes there are problems that come that you're victimized by, but you are for the most part the main issue with regard to sin in your life and somewhere along the way somebody has to come by and put their finger in your face and say thou art the man, right? That is what a reproof is by definition.
Take the math teacher, for instance. “No, Jimmy, 4X4 does not equal 6. You are wrong and you're to blame for not memorizing your fours in the multiplication tables.” So it says there in verse ten, “A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool,” and that is the luxury that you have in being in a Bible-believing church. The preacher or the teacher gets up and puts his finger in your face and says, “You're wrong about, and you need get it before God.” Okay? and if you take that reproof, you are wiser then a fool that is beaten publicly and still doesn't get it.
Verse 10 is a great verse, folks. And remember, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
