Fear of COVID-19 and weakened faith were most frequently cited as reasons for staying away from Mass.
(LifeSiteNews) – A recent survey shows that more than half of Ireland’s former Mass-goers have chosen not to return largely due to fear of COVID-19 and weakened faith.
A November 2021 Amárach Research survey of Irish Catholics found that more than 53 percent of those who “identified as Mass-goers” before COVID-19 have not been going to Mass since.
Of those who have chosen not to go back to Mass, 61 percent said they are staying away because of fear of COVID-19. This was the case for 55 percent of those ages 35-44, 48 percent of those 45-54, and 68 percent of those over 55.
“A further 13% said they had underlying health issues that prevent them from going to Mass at this time,” The Irish Catholic reported.
The survey also seemed to show collateral damage to people’s faith from the virus and lockdowns: Twenty-one percent said they no longer attend Mass because their faith is not as strong as it used to be. Interestingly, this response more frequently came from men and younger younger people. Twenty-six percent of men cited weakened faith as they reason they didn’t return to Mass versus 17 percent of women.
Also, “almost a third (32%) of the 35-44 age group said their faith had suffered as a result of the pandemic,” whereas that was the case for 23% in the 45-54 age bracket and 17% for those over 55.
A significant number of former Mass-goers (19 percent) also said they now prefer to watch the Mass being streamed online. Older respondents were more likely to show this preference: 26 percent of those over age 55 preferred to view the Mass online. Fourteen percent of those age 45-54 and......

Well, since the Catholic church has not done a single, damned thing* to get rid of the pedos, mebbe the stay-aways are taking as an excuse.
If action does not include excommunication, don’t bother talking to me.
Or, perhaps they ain’t too happy with the useless pope they’ve been saddled with. I know the cardinals are supposed select the next in line but didn’t think it was the Arizona Cardinals. :-}
“Or, perhaps they ain’t too happy with the useless pope they’ve been saddled with.”
I don’t know. It seems to me that the more lukewarm the Catholic, the more he/she actually likes Bergoglio. Pope Francis confirms the weak and fallen-away Catholics in their y apostasy and mediocrity. This is the mentality... Nothing really matters. If there’s a heaven, everyone goes. If not, then let’s do something about climate change. Christianity is okay, but so are Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. No one has a monopoly on truth, etc. etc.
In my experience, the Catholics who like Bergoglio the least are the ones who show up in the pews every Sunday.
The Catholics are at their church service across the street right now. Lots of Irish names in this town. But almost all the attendees look well over 70. The few younger people are sons and daughters driving their elderly parents to church. There are no altar boys because no kids go to church. They have one 70ish year-old altar girl. This church is now classified a mission, doesn’t qualify as a church anymore. A circuit priest covers 4 churches in the area. He’s Nigerian, there are no American Catholic priests for miles.
The future of the Catholic Church in the USA doesn’t look bright. I left long ago when the hierarchy covered up the sexual predation on the young.
Perhaps if we didn’t have a false pope....
They didn’t leave the church, the church left them.
The ImPopester is a heretic, you can’t follow a leader like that unless you want to end up in hell.
Transferring pedophile priests around to unsuspecting parishes is why I left the church 40 years ago.
It’s a Calvinist revival!!
An old joke - a Calvinist revival is when the actual unbelievers leave, and the church is halved. I can joke about it, I’m a Calvinist.
It’s not just the Catholic faith, it’s most Protestant churches too.
A church service without a choir, or congregation singing, isn’t a very joyful service. Especially at Christmas, churches should be belting out the carols, but we’re afraid to. It might make someone sick. At one church I know of, there will be singing, but everyone must wear a mask.
We bury our loved ones without a proper service, we have stopped singing our joy to the heavens.
And we have done all of this, in the vain hope of avoiding an unseen demon that may harm some of us... if we act like Christians.
Interesting, thanks. I was surprised to see and hear what’s happening here, this is a town with a church on every block, many denominations even though the town has less than 3,000 people.
You are more likely to be abused by someone you and your family know and trust (including friends, teachers and GASP family) than by an outsider, and other religious leaders are JUST as likely to abuse as priests are. You honestly don’t think imams diddle kids?! Rabbis and ministers do it too. This was never a catholic issue, this was a leftists hate the catholic church so pretend it was a catholic issue. You know the left lies, yet on this one issue you buy into their lies. And again, THAT SAID, if ANYONE does this then prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
THIS was the intent of the church lockouts (allegedly for covid) all along.
ABSOLUTLEY UNTRUE!!!!!!!!
BTW, Our Lady of Guadalupe has been a favorite of mine since I was taken as a child to Mexico to see the cloak over 60 years ago. I’ve also seen the famous painting in Taos, NM that changes at night and toured most of the pilgrimage churches in Rome. Seeing the chains that held St. Peter, the second basement below the Vatican (search ‘Scavi Tour’ at the Vatican site) and the most stunning of all, a full size front and back computer-generated replica of the Shroud of Turin at the Cathedral of St. Helena were all very spiritual experiences.
I misread your statement. YOU ARE CORRECT~
If you have an FSSP parish within driving distance, it is worth checking into. We are being targeted, but trust in God’s Providence. There is one in Littleton and one in Colorado Springs.
I misread your statement—You are CORRECT!
Glasses are now on!!
Thanks, but I’m a long way from the Front Range by choice. I’ll keep my eyes open though.
