Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Luke 1:26-38

Friends, today’s Gospel shows how Mary became the mother of all the members of the Body of Christ.

From the cross, Jesus pronounced this word to St. John: “Behold, your mother.” He was giving Mary not only to John, but through John to the whole Church. Mary would be the mother of all the beloved disciples of Jesus up and down the centuries.

Then we recall that, at the Annunciation, the angel declared to the maiden of Nazareth: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” The two persons required for the Incarnation were, in other words, the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother.

Now we can make the connection: in becoming the mother of Christ, Mary, by extension, would become mother of all of those members of Christ’s Mystical Body across space and time. Just as the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother were required to bring about the Incarnation in history, so those same two agents are required to bring about the birth of Christ in our souls.

Reflect: Are you in tune with the work of the Holy Spirit and of the Blessed Mother in your relationship with Christ? Reflect on their subtle yet powerful influence in the Mystical Body of Christ.

KEYWORDS:
" I will put enmity between you
and the woman,

and between your offspring and hers;
he will strike at your head,
while you strike at his
heel.”

The man called his wife Eve,
because she became the mother of all the living.

+++The angel Gabriel was sent from
God
to a town of Galilee called
Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named
Joseph, of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace!
The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what
was said
and pondered what sort of greeting
this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your
womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be
called
Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the
throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of
Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no
end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a
man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your
relative,
has also conceived a son in her old
age,
and this is the sixth month for her
who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for
God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the
handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to
your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Worth reading at least,

“Jesus said that the truth will set us free. (John 8:32) However, He did not say that the truth would necessarily be easy to accept. It was painful for me to learn the information that I am about to share with you, but it was also liberating and it led to a closer relationship with God.

As a faithful Catholic, and later as a nun, I practiced Mary worship for many years without realizing it. The prayers and practices were so familiar. They were taught to me by good people, sincere people that I trusted. I prayed rosaries and wore a scapular and engaged in other “devotions” which I honestly thought were good and pleasing to God. Because of my lack of knowledge of the Bible and of Church history, I honestly had no idea that I was actually worshipping Mary.

If modern Catholic teachings and doctrines about Mary are true, then they will not be contrary to Scripture, the writings of the Early Fathers, or the decrees of past popes. For a devout Catholic to question these issues and put them to the test can be painful. It certainly was for me. However, it would be far more painful to have God correct us when we face Him on Judgment Day.”

Thank you, sister-in-Christ, for your eloquent and Bible-based reply. I am looking forward to meeting Mary, daughter of Heli in heaven, not because she is “the queen of heaven” or “co-redemptrix” or “conceived immaculately,” or “full of grace so she can dispense it,” but because of her humility and privilege of fulfilling Isaiah 7:14, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and His name shall be called Immanuel (which being translated is “God with us” as the gospel explains).

A Baptist who has brotherly love for Catholics, and who rejects any teaching contrary to the plain meaning of scripture.
