Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 2

The Magi Visit the Messiah

2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

6  “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”

7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father Who Art in Heaven,
How Blessed and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
We Enter Your Gates With thanksgiving
and Your Courts With Praise,
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are God,
You Alone Are The Most High!
Ancient of Days and Rock of All Ages,
The Lord of Hosts,
LORD, Our Banner,
Our Righteousness,
Our Provider and Our Healer,
You are Our Creator
and we are the Sheep of Your Pasture.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Let all that has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

God Bless America.

Psalm 125

A Song of Ascents.

1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides for ever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time on and for evermore.
3 For the sceptre of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous may not stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4 Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts.
5 But those who turn aside to their own crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with evildoers.
Peace be upon Israel!

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

What a mountain of Art, Music, Literature, and Culture has emerged from this brief Chapter in Matthew. From the Christmas Song "We Three Kings" to the Epic Movie Ben Hur, the Magi, or "Three Wise Men from the East", have fueled the imaginations of Western Civilization for 2000 years. However, from the Biblical Passage, we don't get much information, so nearly all of our ideas about them are later additions.

Gen. Lew Wallace's 1880 Book Ben Hur established the number three (based upon the number of gifts) and gave names and ethnicities to the Magi. Manger Scenes show them in attendance, although there is actually a two-year window in Scripture for their arrival in Bethlehem. Also the Scriptures mention a "house", which the Grotto of the Nativity could not be called by any stretch of the imagination. Still, the idea of three Wise Men, one from China, one from Persia, and one from Africa, representing the Gentile Nations and at least three of the Races of Mankind, is a very appealing one, if not supported Biblically. It has become part of our culture, and a good way of teaching that, from the very Beginning, the Messiah would be for ALL People, not just the Jews.

The Bible does tell us what the three gifts were, and they are important. They were Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh.

Gold was a gift fit for a King. It represented the Wealth of the Nations, the Authority of Kingship, and Incorruptability.

Frankincense was a gift that should only be given to God. As I mentioned in an earlier meditation, the Temple Incense was not to be used as a personal perfume or room freshener. It was an article of Worship.

Finally, we have Myrrh, which was used to enbalm the Dead. This was a foreshadowing of the Death and Burial of the little Boy they were worshipping.

"Worship" is the key word in this Passage. It doesn't matter how many Magi there were, what their names or ethnicities were, where they came from, or where they were going. They were in a Jewish home, worshipping a little Boy! If the Boy were just an ordinary kid, Joseph and Mary would have thrown them out. It would have horrified them.

But Joseph, Mary, and the Magi knew something that the rest of the world had yet to find out.

And so, another Christmas Song "Mary Did You Know", is also an historical inaccuracy.

Mary knew. Joseph knew. The Magi knew. As the Scriptures say, Mary kept these things in her heart and pondered them. And now, thanks to The Holy Spirit inspired Word of God, we can ponder them too.
