PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 11/19/2021

“He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good” (Proverbs 19:8).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good” (Proverbs 19:8).

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17).

We are talking about heavenly wisdom, when Solomon was talking about wisdom personified in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, he wrote: “For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death” (Proverbs 8:35-36). So, rightly he says here, “He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul.”

When a man gets that heavenly wisdom, he gets life for his soul. There is no money that can buy this, it can only be purchased with the Blood of Jesus Christ, and it was He that bought it for “whomsoever will may come.”

“He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul,” some people do not love their soul, or the spiritual side of their nature—they are just concerned about pleasing their flesh. This is why they never truly get wisdom. They might get “religion,” but that is like putting a band-aid on a wound instead of seeking medical help. When they hear that you have something good for their soul, to them it doesn’t look good, it doesn’t sound good, it certainly doesn’t taste good (it is bitter), and they are simply not interested.

There are some people that are interested in it, that is the kind of person that loves his own soul.

“. . . he that keepeth understanding shall find good,” that is, they stick with it until they understand what they are doing and go through the door of salvation. Many people are resting on the doorstep, content in their “religious experience,” but it is short-lived, and they are soon back in the world. A lot of people come up to it, and they get a little taste of it; but they decide that it costs too much, it takes too much time, and it is too much trouble to stay with wisdom. “For in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
