Biden Administration Restores Abortion to Human Rights Reports

WASHINGON, DC, November 12 (C-Fam) The U.S. Department of State is once again including a section on “reproductive rights” in its annual reports tracking the human rights records of other countries’. On November 4, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the 2020 reports, released earlier this year, have been updated with the new section.

The “reproductive rights” section in the reports was first included under former President Barack Obama, then removed by former President Donald Trump’s administration, provoking outrage among abortion activists, who called on current President Joe Biden to restore it. When the 2020 reports were published in March, Blinken promised the missing section would be provided as an addendum at a later date, and that it would be included in future years’ reports.

For abortion groups, using the State Department’s considerable influence to advance their agenda has been a high priority. Pro-abortion members of Congress have proposed legislation that would mandate the inclusion of the “reproductive rights” section, with explicit instructions to report “whether such country has adopted and enforced policies. . .to expand or restrict access to safe abortion services.”

The proposed bill also cites a general comment by the Human Rights Committee, which monitors compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the U.S. has ratified. However, the comment, which asserts that abortion is a right under certain circumstances, is not binding, nor does it reflect the text of the treaty itself.

The country will pay dearly for this continuing abomination.

I'm not too sure about this story. Let me give you an example from the report for Laos (where abortion is completely prohibited)

Reproductive Rights: Couples and individuals have the right to decide the number, spacing, and timing of their children and to manage their reproductive health, and they had access to the information and means to do so, free from discrimination, coercion, or violence. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) reported, however, that information on and access to sexual and reproductive health services were limited, especially for unmarried youth.

Social and cultural barriers restricted access to contraception. Contraceptive commodities were not widely available in rural areas and were often unaffordable.

No legal, social, or cultural barriers, or government policies undercut access to skilled health attendance during pregnancy and childbirth, although poverty and an underdeveloped health care system impeded such access for some women. UNFPA’s 2020 report stated that 34 percent of women used a modern method of contraception while 8 percent of women had an unmet need for family planning.

The government provided access to sexual and reproductive health services to survivors of sexual violence.

According to 2017 UN estimates, the maternal mortality rate was 185 deaths per 100,000 live births, and the lifetime risk of maternal death was one in 150. Pregnancy and childbirth remained a leading cause of death among women of reproductive age due to limited antenatal and obstetric care and services as well as high rates of adolescent pregnancy, especially in rural areas. According to UNFPA estimates, skilled health personnel attended 64 percent of births, and very few medical centers were equipped to deal with obstetric emergencies, especially in small or ethnic villages. The adolescent birth rate remained high at 83 births per 1,000 girls between 15 and 19 years of age.

Coercion in Population Control: There were no reports of coerced abortion or involuntary sterilization on the part of government authorities.

Discrimination: The law provides equal rights for women and men and equal pay for equal work, but in some regions traditional attitudes about gender roles kept women and girls in subordinate positions and prevented them from equally accessing education, employment, and business opportunities. The law also prohibits discrimination in marriage and inheritance, although varying degrees of cultural-based discrimination against women persisted, with greater discrimination practiced by some ethnic minority groups in remote areas.

The Lao Women’s Union operated countrywide to promote the position of women in society, including by conducting programs to strengthen the role of women; programs were most effective in urban areas. Many women occupied decision-making positions in the civil service and private business, and in urban areas their incomes frequently were higher than those of men. Poverty continued to affect women disproportionately, especially in rural and ethnic minority communities.

The only mention of abortion is talking about whether there is coerced abortion.

It looks like it is mostly talking about access to contraception, etc. Not in favor of artificial contraception, but that's a world different than abortion.

You don’t want kids, then keep your skanky legs together and your pants zipped. Use a condom or whatever. Outside of rape, there is no reason to get pg if you don’t want it to happen.

The abortion activists called on current Joe Biden to restore it.......however the decision was made by Biden and now lays directly at his own feet in direct opposition to He who is the creator of life.

It’s no longer taking responsibility for the outcome of a sexual act....it’s now all about getting rid of the evidence....which is murder. Abortion is criminal regardless what people think or believe.

It's easy to bash the Biden administration, but isn't it true that most Americans are pro-abort?

Not saying that makes it OK to murder babies, but it says something about our country that isn't just a matter of the policies of handful of ruling class types.
