“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).

Verse 20 is one of those verses, and we've mentioned it in conjunction with other verses as we’ve gone through our devotions on Proverbs; but Proverbs chapter 13:20 is one of the things that you know modern Christianity is probably most guilty of, and it probably has as little concern about as anything in the world.

Many of us have raised our kids, some of us have raised a couple and have a couple still in the nest. Some of you are still on the front side of it, and some of you are on the back side of it. If any of us have any kind of sense, we have a real concern about what kind of folks are kids are running with, right?

Now, the other thing about that is sometimes we get real, real concerned about our kids and our teenagers and so on; but sometimes I've noticed that saved people really are careless about this thing as well. Folks, in verse 20 it says, “he that walketh with wise men shall be wise.” You can look it up, and there aren't any promises that state, “shall be wise!” I mean, it doesn't even say if you read your Bible, you shall be wise, using that technical verbiage. Of course, we know if we read our Bible, study our Bible, we know that we have access to wisdom and all those sorts of things; but the Bible says that “he that walketh with wise men shall be wise.” I'll tell you what, folks, whoever it is you are walking with—this is the truth of the matter. Consider Amos chapter 3.

If you're walking for very long with somebody, there is a reasonable conclusion that we can reach about that matter. Whether it be walking with God (it does apply to that) or whether it be walking with whoever, “can two walk together except they be agreed” (verse 3), Right?

Here’s the issue. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise,” if you start walking with a guy and walk far enough with him, long enough with him, you'll eventually agree with him. That’s usually the way it works. “Can two walk together except they be agreed?”

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
