PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 11/9/2021
King James Bible | 11/9/2021 | pilgrimsprogress

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” (Proverbs 9:9-10).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” (Proverbs 9:9-10).

That all sounds really good. That sounds all real high-brow, and ideologically there's nothing wrong with that. Except the problem is that we are all stinking sinners, and the problem is that once in a while we were reduced to having a bit in our teeth and a rein on the side of our head with the Lord on our backs pulling us and reining us in like a horse. There is just sometimes that we will be reduced (and I grant you it's not the best motive in the world) but you're reduced to, “If I do this God might want whup me upside the head.” We are all reduced to that once in a while. I know it's not the best thing. I know you're supposed to love righteousness, but the problem is that we don't all the time notwithstanding the cultists out there that believe you are only saved if you are sinlessly perfect. So, sometimes we need to be reminded that we need to be scared of God, and not do things that are displeasing in His sight because we are scared of God and the consequences of winding up sick or even dead: “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep” (1 Corinthians 11:29-30).

In the end, that's a fine motive until a better one comes along. Okay, now it says there, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,” you're not wise unless you fear God. Here comes along stupid Einstein, and I’m still not quite sure I buy into the relatively theory. I mean I don't know. Many have read it in High School and college, but I'm probably just too dumb to grasp it. Even the way he sets it forth, not quite sure I buy it; but here is a guy who was one of the fathers of the nuclear age and the Atom bomb and all that kind of stuff. Here's a God that was able to turn his extremely high wattage brain on and think about stuff that most of us probably can't reach up and touch with our puny minds; but in the end he is a sinner that's burning in hell, screaming and agonizing just like everybody else because guess what, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Here was a man with much knowledge, but he was totally ignorant of the holy. The bottom line is simple, the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge and if you don't fear God, you don't know diddly squat. You really don’t.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
