PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 11/2/2021
King James Bible | 11/2/2021 | pilgrimsprogress

“He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints" (Proverbs 2:8).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints" (Proverbs 2:8).

Proverbs 2:1-8 presents to us the “fear of the Lord” (vss. 1-5), and then “sound wisdom” (vss. 6-8). The knowledge of these things do not just come without effort. People think that they just arrive more quickly than they do, and they really don't. We go through those things in verses 1 through 4 that we might understand the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God, and we go through those things in verse 6 and 7 and 8 that “then shalt thou understand” four things: “righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.”

Now, consider this: Where is love in all that? Do you ever think about that? Everything in modern Christian society is bathed in valentine red and lacey pink stuff. Everything these days has to be a reflection of love in modern-day Christianity. I'm just pointing out that love is not mentioned here. In fact, love is not mentioned until Proverbs 1:22 and the next mention of it is all the way over in Proverbs 3:12. Love is not in here now.

This is not to say that love is bad because love is not bad. I just want you to know that love is not always the first thing, or the primary thing if we read this right. You need righteousness, judgment, equity, and every good path. In fact, if you want to bring love into it, consider this: “He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good" (Proverbs 19:8).

It doesn’t generally take very long when trying to teach modern Christians doctrine, wisdom, and understanding from the Bible, and teach them about God before somebody stands up and says, “Well, I don't know about all this stuff. I just want to love Jesus.” Well, you don't love the Lord unless you love wisdom.

“Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path," and remember back in verse 8, “he keepeth the paths of judgment;” that's one of the good paths.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
