“Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit” (Proverbs 26:5).
Now, the Bible makes commentary on these folks that think they are wise: First, Paul says, “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22); notice also, further down in verse 12: “Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him . . . the sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason” (Proverbs 26:12, 16). There are a handful of categories of men who do this. They think that because they think something, that it has to be right.
We are told to be able to give a reason for the hope that is in us. We are told in proverbs 22 that the Lord gives us the words of God that we might with certainty be able to answer them that send unto us for an answer. Well, the sluggard; that lazy guy, always has the perfect excuse to not do the right thing, his problem is that he's lazy.
“The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out” (Proverbs 28:11).
A guy thinks that because he has money, that he can do what he wants to, and that he's right. After all, he had to be the smart to get all his money; therefore, he must be right about everything. You need to be careful about money. You had better be careful about foolishness. You had better be careful about laziness, because in the end, you'll justify your own opinions, no matter what, because the fool thinks he's right all the time.
“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in” (Romans 11:25).
