Indigenous ‘Expert’ Who Advised Book Burnings at Catholic Schools in Canada Draws Scrutiny

Over 4,700 individual books, comprised of several hundred titles, were removed from the shelves or put under review due to alleged outdated, incorrect, or inappropriate depictions of indigenous people.

TORONTO, Ontario —A Catholic school district in Canada that decided to burn 30 library books about indigenous people and remove some 4,700 others due to alleged mistakes and insensitive portrayals took advice from a woman whose indigenous status and expertise is now in question.

“We were not aware that Suzy Kies does not have Indian status under (federal law) and sincerely believed that we had the opportunity to work with an experienced Indigenous knowledge keeper,” Lyne Cossette, a spokesperson for the school board in southwest Ontario, told the Toronto Sun.

“These revelations have prompted us to rethink our library review process,” Cossette said. “As such, we are pausing the entire Giving Back to Mother Earth project and reviewing how to move forward with regard to the reconciliation efforts that were at the heart of this endeavor.”

Cosette said the school board had believed Kies’ claims to be “an Indigenous woman from the Wbanaki Confederacy and the Turtle Clan.” Others had made assurances that she was of indigenous descent.

“We regret that we did not research her more thoroughly,” she said.

Kies, who lives in the Barrie area north of Toronto, is an advocate for indigenous Canadians. In 2017 she became co-chair of the Indigenous peoples’ commission in the Liberal Party of Canada, which has held control of the House of Commons since 2015. The announcement of her appointment noted her claims of indigenous ancestry, specifically naming several indigenous bands.

“Despite the hurtful questioning of my ancestry, identity and culture, I will continue my work to advance reconciliation and honor my family history,” Kies said. In a statement to CBC Radio-Canada, she said.......

Indigenous? Meaning they got here from someplace else before others did. Maybe from Africa via Mongolia using a land bridge.

If she’s 1/1024, that’s enough, right?

How do you know they didn’t murder anybody who was already here?

So the book burning seemed a good idea at the time, but now… what are you saying, genius?

My standard Nuremberg Law reference chart indicates that she is not to be counted as a Jewess an indigenous person.

A Catholic school district in Canada that decided to burn 30 library books…

Agreeing to burn books is their second mistake. Hiring this woke poseur is their first.

I don’t have that chart handy, but was thinking of Sen. Warren. 1/1024 was sufficient for her to be Native American, at least in her own mind.

This is simply hilarious. It reminds me of when some guy called up a fast food joint full of genius employees and conned them into strip searching each other.

Wow, a school has to rethink its book burning policy? Quite a hornet's nest, bound to be controversy about abandoning that.

So the book burning seemed a good idea at the time, but now… what are you saying, genius?

They're saying that book-burning is good when an "Indigenous Person" (IP) recommends it, but suddenly becomes bad when it turns out that that IP actually has no Indigenous heritage.

Funny, how that works!

Isn't the name they gave their project just a little... ingenuous?

Shouldn't it have more honestly been called the "Giving Over to the Flames" project?

Goebbels would have been proud!

“We regret that we did not research her more thoroughly,” she said.”

They didn't do any damn research at all!

I guess that, in the case of Indians, one can make discreet inquiries about membership in Tribes, and whether one's name actually appears in official registries - but what about other ethnic groups who also deserve recognition and/or demand special privileges?!

Let's say that I claim that I have Rumanian heritage, and appear at a school and demand that they burn books "hurtful" to people of Rumanian ethnicity?

How can they call me out on that?

Regards,
