“The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious” (Proverbs 12:27).

“The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious” (Proverbs 12:27).

What we have, we need to take care of and there are some things that are more important than others. We Americans are really bad about wasting time. The Bible says twice in the New Testament that we are to redeem the time because it is something that we can't get back once it’s gone. It says there that “the substance of a diligent man is precious,” and this is not just about money. It is about money, but it's not just about money. It’s about a lot of things. It's also about our spiritual heritage.

Many of you have invested 10, 15, 20 years in a good Bible-believing church. You have raised your children in the church. Young people, you've been raised in the church. Some of your parents have been in this church for a generation or more. Don't waste what you've gotten from it all.

We need to be diligent with what we’ve received, because not everyone has received this. A fellow that was born into a family that went to Saint Tim's of the Epiphany would not have the same kind of spiritual heritage that Bible believers have today. We would not have heard some of the things that we have heard throughout our entire lifetime. We would not know the biblical truth that many of us take for granted. It just isn’t taught there.

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” (Luke 16:10-11).

This is not to say that everybody has to squeeze a penny till they can't squeeze it anymore. but the basic idea is if you're careful and you are diligent, that's the right thing to be. We tend to be wasteful as Americans in general and it's a lot of it is because we've been very prosperous as a nation. We need to be diligent with what the Lord has given us. We need to consider our time to be precious, our substance needs to be precious, as should be our family and our church. We need to be diligent in the small things of life also, because if you let a little thing slide, you'll probably let a big thing slide.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
