“Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows" (Proverbs 7:12-14).
First of all, she is happy to basically marry her religion with other licentious and gross acts. So, you’ll find thousands of very religious people that think nothing of drunkenness. They think nothing of fornication and adultery and think nothing of gambling and everything else under the sun. They have even built into their religion periods where they can act like they are sorry for a few weeks and gain pardon from the head of their church, who they claim to be Jesus Christ; but it is anybody but!
They have this so-called mourning period that they call “lent.” It is a time where they are supposed to give up stuff like Snickers bars and stuff. And they have built into that a day that you can live like the devil because tomorrow we start something holy. If you think that all wicked people just aren't religious enough, you would be wrong. Religion is not the answer! Religion is the least effective answer because you can marry religion with everything under the sun. This woman is willing to set that religion right beside grossness and licentiousness and let it abide there.
Another thing about this. If you recall, David goes up on the upper parapet of his dwelling when he is supposed to be out fighting. Well, he's not fighting, and he sees Bathsheba and he calls for her. He calls for because she was what? Washing her uncleanness. It’s okay, because she was ritually clean. You say, “That's hypocrisy!” and of course it is. That is exactly what it is. So, in verse 14 it says, “I have peace offerings.” They are strengthened and nourished by the holy, so they can sin. If you want to see an example, consider Hosea, chapter 2.
