“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him” (Proverbs 30:5).
In the previous verse the question is asked, “What is his son’s name?” In today’s verse we read, “Every word of God is pure.” The answer is that Jesus Christ’s name is “the word of God.” It's interesting that he asked the question, and there the answer is. Also notice that there's a couple of interesting things besides. That question is asked in other places: two other places specifically.
In Genesis 32, this is where Jacob is on the run from Esau and wrestled with the Angel and had his name changed from Jacob to Israel “for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed” (28). Now Jacob has a question. It goes on to say verse 29, “Jacob asked him, and said, tell me I pray thee thy name he said wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? and he blessed him there.” He never answered the question. Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, which means, what you think? “Face to face, or face of God.” And we know that from verse 30, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
Many hold that it was the Angel of the Lord that Jacob wrestled with—a preincarnate appearance of Jesus Christ. He said that he had seen the face of God. What's his name? Well, the word of God—the face of God.
There is another one like this in Judges 13. Samson's mother and father. The Angel appears to Manoah's wife, Samson's mother and then Manoah meets him as well.
“And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour? And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?” (Judges 13:17-18).
Do you see the name of the Lord somewhere within the verse or the next verse, or so? “What is thy name?” “It's the word of God.” “What is thy name?” “Oh, it's the face of God.” “What is thy name?” asks Manoah. What do you think? How about rock? The Lord is our rock. Christ was the rock in first Corinthians 10, right? How about the word “wondrously?” I know it's not quite the same word, but “His name shall be called wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting father.”
All three times you have this the question asked, “What's your name?” it never says, “Well, my name is . . .,” but the name is right there. “The word of God.” “The face of God,” “The rock,” and “Wonderful.” Kind of cool, huh? Well, I thought so. Oh, and in Revelation 19, we are told that his name shall be called the word of God.
