I agree with you.
Unfortunately, what the Pope often says makes it hard to find the benefit of the doubt, if at all, or even if he desires it or not. This is one of those offhanded comments again- and it keeps the focus on him.
In fact what the Pope said is very interesting. Don't write me letters- NOT the sodomy part, or "his" idea of Confession in contrast to the Church's- those are for sure ill-handled, muddled issues to be sure.
So the EXACT Quote- which provided the sensational, devlish headlines as it does - (and don't kid yourself- Headlines are ALL about the clicks these days.) is as follows:

Pope Francis: “There is, for example, a large Catholic television channel that has no hesitation in continually speaking ill of the pope. I personally deserve attacks and insults because I am a sinner, but THE CHURCH does not deserve them. They (Attacks on the Church- my edit) are the work of the devil. I have also said this to some of them.”

That's how I interpret that. If the Pope is aware that HE DESERVES attacks and insults- how could he turn around and say that's the devil's work? Doesn't make Sense.
That's the interesting part- the Pope is "aware" he is purposefully doing something that would cause him these "attacks" - personally and so the devil's work has to be (the "They") are in attacking the Church- allegedly.

Now if he is saying EWTN is attacking the Church, which I have not seen (Mother Angelica R.I.P.)- than that it is obviously an issue -which most would think he is incorrect- that begs to be clarified, detailed and/or at least supported in some way. Though since the volume has been amped.. there is no room now for unambiguous clarification - especially when skin is so thin these days
