Well, this is not all that earth-shattering or new. The Church long ago accepted homosexuality as a legitimate thing. There are two ways to look at this latest development. By embracing civil unions, the Pope and the Church are simultaneously denying gay marriage as a legitimate thing. Civil unions are a legal matter, not a theological one.

So you’re OK with civil legalization of sodomy?
How about the legalization of infanticide?

CS Lewis rightly saw the need for a hard distinction between CHRISTIAN marriage and civil secular marriage. Albeit it was 80 years ago - when even just a debate over divorce became a flash point.
Back then, he wondered if it should be that Christian divorce laws be forced upon a non-believing secular citizenry...
Obviously not...and so proposed a strong distinction between the two... and had he lived today he would also still advocate necessity for that strict separation of what the SACRAMENTAL MARRIAGE on the Altar means- as opposed to a legal civil agreement between two sides- that can be broken on a whim- whenever one wants another partner- which in our day now also includes homosexual and other alternative forms of a "union" that can be legislated secular, but certainly NOT as Christian...as even THIS Pope continues to remind.
SEPARATE- and certainly NOT EQUAL
