“He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot” (Proverbs 9:7).
Alright, verse 7 picks up kind of a new strain. You notice that in verse 7, there's a scorner spoken of and a wicked man spoken of. In verse 8, a scorner is spoken of again, and a wise man is spoken of. You'll find in the Book of Proverbs that there are a few fellows that continually are brought up so much, that it's almost like it's constantly comparing these people. One is a simple man, one is a wise man, and one is a scorner, and one is a fool. They are not always all hard and clearly divided lines, but sometimes it seems that they are, and you're introduced here to the scorner in verse 7.
“He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.” We'll talk about this scorner in just a second, but notice proverbs 14:6, “A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.”
We learn a little something about people. Did you ever meet somebody just didn't seem to get it? Have you ever meet somebody who uses an excuse that they couldn't understand a spiritual matter? There's a reason for that, and I don't just mean that they are deprived of light and that they can't getteth merely because they are bound in trespasses and sins, or that they are natural men, okay? It goes a little beyond that.
Considering 14:6 coupled with our verse for today, 9:7, “He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame,” we can see that this scorner has no intention of turning, and that's exactly the problem. In 14:6, “a scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not,” okay? You know what, folks, there are a lot of people in colleges that are scorners. They have already made up their minds. They're not going to believe in God. They're not going to believe in creation. They're not going to believe in Jesus Christ. But they will believe any other kind of wisdom that comes their way, be it true or be it semi-true or be false. But as far as being interested in biblical truth, they are a scorner, and so it is that “a scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not.”
