PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 9/1/2021
King James Bible | 9/1/2021 | pilgrimsprogress

“Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you" (Proverbs 1:23).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you" (Proverbs 1:23).

If all the Bible Seminary professors were here, we could ask them that question. They would say, “Oh sure, but when it came down to nailing them down on what words they were reading, they don't believe what you believe at all. They believe that God speaks in messages, concepts, and thoughts but not words. They believe that He gives us general information, but it when it comes down to the specific words, it's not that.

Consider the words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). You have one version that says one thing and another version that says other things, and that makes the message different, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. And yet to so many people it just doesn't make any difference. Our verse in Proverbs today is most important, “I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.”

I don't know how to help folks that don’t have faith in a God that places His words above His name and has promised to preserve it unto all (not some) generations. There's an emphasis in the Bible on the word of God as an entity I'll grant you that, but there is an even greater emphasis on the words of God.

“Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee [What? Keep what? What is “them?” Words. Oh? It’s not just the “message?”]; they [those words] shall withal be fitted in thy lips" (Proverbs 22:17-18).

Do you know what that means? That means that if you quote the Bible often enough, it seems kind of awkward at times, but after a while it starts rolling off your lips and it's “fitting” into your lips. Verse 19 goes on to say, “That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.”

That your trust may be in the Lord! You can't trust the Lord if you can't trust his words. A man is no better than his word. If you can't trust God for his words, then you can't trust God. Think about it, folks. Consider in closing the next two verses:

“Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?" (Proverbs 22:20-21).

When we answer others, we are to answer in those words. Do you trust them?

God delivered unto you a perfect book. He wrote the words down perfect to start with, and as try as you may, you will never be able to explain or completely trace how God did what he did from the original manuscripts to the copies of the manuscript to the translations of the manuscripts to the translation of the versions; and you will never be able to track all that He did. You have to look to the end of the promise. He either did what he did or he's a liar, and if he lied to you about one thing or if he's too weak to follow through on one thing how can you trust John 3:16?

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
