“Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy” (Proverbs 20:28).
This is a general truth. There have been kings that have tried to be merciful and to put forth truth, and there have been wicked elements that have tried to overthrow them. Bad people have assassinated monarchs. But generally, mercy and truth preserve the king. People rejoice when they are dealt with honestly, and most people rejoice when they are dealt with mercifully. So, those things establish the throne of the king and give him a loyal bunch of subjects.
“For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment” (James 2:13). It is the same thing that Jesus says in Matthew 7, that when we judge, we will be judged by the same measure.
When a king judges mercifully, such as David. David was a merciful man. He only used violence when he had no other choice. For instance, there were times when he could have killed Saul, but he did right and had mercy on him. He had mercy on Mephibosheth when he could have rightly killed him as a potential usurper to the throne, but he was Jonathan’s son—and David loved Jonathan as a brother.
God established his throne, and David had a full reign as king living to be a very old man.
In one week, different judges have ruled that the Ten Commandments must go and that they must be permitted to stay! A South Carolina columnist suggests that faith has become a political football, while others consider it little more than decorative Hollywood voodoo.
Americans stand up for the Ten Commandments, but do we obey them? Preachers believe in them, but do we really preach against the idolatry, lying, adultery, swearing, covetousness and dishonesty they decry?
Apparently, a host of modern preachers proclaim the good news of the Gospel but don't preach the Bible truth that people are lost sinners and will perish in everlasting fire if they do not repent and actually receive Christ as personal Saviour. Many are applauded for preaching against abortion, sodomy and child abuse even though they never 'lift up the trumpet' and warn their people about loose living, profanity, Hollywood theatres, dance clubs, beer drinking, rock music, immodest dress, vulgar and profane television, the love of money, and a host of other evils that keep sinners from yielding to Christ as Saviour. We fear that many modern “additions” to our churches have come without conviction, and thus without conversion. “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17)!
