“The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat” (Proverbs 15:30).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat” (Proverbs 15:30).

“The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart,” I suppose this would be the light of another persons eyes which rejoice your heart when you see the witness of the Holy Spirit in their eyes. The Bible says that “The light of the body is the eye” (Matthew 6:22). Christian people like to be around other Christian people—people that are right with the Lord. People that are faithful to God.

Who in the world likes to be around people that look like they are half-dead, mopping all the time? People that are bitter and are complaining all the time ruin the atmosphere for everyone around them. Listen, I want to be encouraged. I want to be lifted up. Now, we are going to be around people that are having a hard time, and we are going to weep with those that weep. In fact, the light of your presence will help to cheer them up.

“. . . and a good report maketh the bones fat,” a lot of this verse has to do with physical health. You get around the right kind of people, and you receive the right kind of encouragement and it’ll help you. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

Doctors will tell you that a lot of a person’s pain and problems and sickness come from their own attitude. When elderly people go to the hospital, the thing that worries the doctors most is that persons will to live. They start looking for signs of depression right away. If a person loses the will to live, that doctor has little he can do. The healing process has as much to do with the person as with the medicine. But if you get the heart to rejoice and the bones be made fat, that is strength.

Dwight L. Moody wrote:

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (Revelation 21:4).

"A City without tears—God wipes them all away up yonder. This is a time of weeping, but by and by there will be a time when God shall call us where there will be no tears. A City without pain, a City without sorrows, without sickness, without death . . .

"Think of a place where temptations cannot come. Think of a place where we shall be free from sin . . . and where the righteous shall reign forever. Think of a City built without hands, where the buildings do not grow old with time, a City whose inhabitants are numbered by no census except the book of life . . .

"Think of a City where no hearses with their nodding plumes creep slowly with their sad burdens to the cemetery; a City without griefs or graves, without sins or sorrows, without marriages or mourning, without births or burials; a City which glories in having Jesus for its King, angels for its guards, and whose citizens are saints."

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
