PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 8/5/2021

“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding" (Proverbs 5:1).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding" (Proverbs 5:1).

Back in chapter 4:1 we looked at having our attention turned to “attend[ing] to know understanding,” and back in 4:20 we read, “My son, attend to my words.” We get the impression that this very wise father is calling us to attend to some things; to give attention to them.

In 5:1, we have two things: wisdom and understanding. Two things to do with those things, to attend to them and to bow down your ear to them; they require attendance. If you have kids, you know one thing about them is that they require attendance. Once one of them enters your home, you have to attend to them until they're out of the house about eighteen or so years later. There is some junk you can buy that requires your attendance all the time. If you have a swimming pool, you need to attend to it, right? You get an aquarium, you got to attend to it, alright? If Junior gets that dog he always wanted, you’ll have to attend to it as well.

Well, if you're a Christian and if you want to have the wisdom of God; you have to attend to that. It’s not something you can leave lying around. You know, people have this false impression that when you get saved God gives you some stuff and then it's like eternal security: it stays in perfectly shiny order untarnished or anything from that point on. And that is not the case. Salvation is that way, I'll grant you that; but wisdom is not. You cannot forget more than you've learned.

It says, “My son, attend unto my wisdom and bow thine ear to my understanding.” So, that tells you something right away. That tells you why the world will never turn to the Bible for understanding, and the reason why is because it requires humility. We do not like to hear how sorry we are. We don't like to hear how helpless we are. We don't like to hear that the world has it wrong; but they do. So, it says, “and bow thine ear to my understanding.”

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
