“He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets” (Proverbs 22:11-13).
Perhaps the most remarkable example of a slothful man is found in Proverbs chapter 19.
“A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again” (Proverbs 19:24).
Now, this is pretty lazy. It’s pretty bad. Maybe he has a cupcake in his hand, or whatever, but a man is pretty lazy when he is not willing to bring his hand to his mouth. That’s pretty bad.
“As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth” (Proverbs 26:14-15).
The poor man can only get one bite off of his chicken leg, and it just grieves him to bring it back up, so he’s just going to have to lay there with that greasy chicken leg in his hand. Maybe somebody will come along in a bit to bring that leg back up to his mouth so he can take another bite, assuming he has the strength.
“The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason” (Proverbs 26:16).
This sluggard is a brilliant man. He is the smartest dude around; but he's just a lazy bum.
