Portland Catholic Leaders Say 'Land Back' Vandalism Hurtful

Officials with Holy Redeemer Catholic Church said the damage has been repaired after appearing on their building's glass doors.

Unknown vandals struck a historic Portland place of worship over the weekend, according to religious authorities.

The glass doors at the main entrance of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 N. Rosa Parks Way, were coated with spray paint messages and symbols sometime before Monday morning, July 12.

In an interview, Associate Pastor Michael Belinsky said the act of vandalism left him feeling "disappointed."

"Mostly I was disappointed that there's no way to communicate in a direct and rational fashion," he said. "But the church has always been a lightning rod, as with any institution."

Father Bellinsky noted that the damage was limited to paint, and didn't include broken glass or other destruction. The real issue he said, are incidents like the Palm Sunday church bombings earlier this year, and other attacks on people of faith.

My 7th-grade history book in the late 50s actually discussed such a situation. The scenario was that if Communism (it was considered a bad thing back then) were to ever take over, cities with religious names like all the California cities starting with San or Santa would have to change their names.

It seemed so far-fetched then, but now, I can see a move to do it.
