An abandoned Catholic church on Kehewin Cree Nation has been destroyed by arsonists.
It adds to the tally of mainly Catholic churches across the West that have been set alit or vandalized since news broke about the graves of hundreds of children being found on the grounds of former residential schools.
But this time the RCMP has made an arrest.
Sgt. Ron Bumbry said about 9:45 p.m. on July 6, Bonnyville RCMP along with Kehewin and Bonnyville fire services rushed to reports of a fire at the abandoned Our Lady of Mercy Church on First Nations land, 235 km northeast of Edmonton.
“The building was slated to be demolished as it had been vacant for many years. Through investigation police learned the fire was deliberately set. No one was injured,” said Bumbry.
Bonnyville RCMP has arrested and charged a youth with arson in relation to this incident.
The youth has been released from custody and is set to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Youth Court on Sept. 21, 2021.
The name of the youth will not be released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
