Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 106

Psalm 106

1  Praise the Lord.[a]
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.

2  Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord
    or fully declare his praise?

3  Blessed are those who act justly,
    who always do what is right.

4  Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people,
    come to my aid when you save them,

5  that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,
    that I may share in the joy of your nation
    and join your inheritance in giving praise.

6  We have sinned, even as our ancestors did;     we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

7  When our ancestors were in Egypt,
    they gave no thought to your miracles;
they did not remember your many kindnesses,
    and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.[b]

8  Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,
    to make his mighty power known.

9  He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;
    he led them through the depths as through a desert.

10  He saved them from the hand of the foe;
    from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.

11  The waters covered their adversaries;
    not one of them survived.

12  Then they believed his promises
    and sang his praise.

13  But they soon forgot what he had done
    and did not wait for his plan to unfold.

14  In the desert they gave in to their craving;
    in the wilderness they put God to the test.

15  So he gave them what they asked for,
    but sent a wasting disease among them.

16  In the camp they grew envious of Moses
    and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.

17  The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan;
    it buried the company of Abiram.

18  Fire blazed among their followers;
    a flame consumed the wicked.

19  At Horeb they made a calf
    and worshiped an idol cast from metal.

20  They exchanged their glorious God
    for an image of a bull, which eats grass.

21  They forgot the God who saved them,
    who had done great things in Egypt,

22  miracles in the land of Ham
    and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

23  So he said he would destroy them—
    had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach before him
    to keep his wrath from destroying them.

24  Then they despised the pleasant land;
    they did not believe his promise.

25  They grumbled in their tents
    and did not obey the Lord.

26  So he swore to them with uplifted hand
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,

27  make their descendants fall among the nations
    and scatter them throughout the lands.

28  They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor
    and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;

29  they aroused the Lord’s anger by their wicked deeds,
    and a plague broke out among them.

30  But Phinehas stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was checked.

31  This was credited to him as righteousness
    for endless generations to come.

32  By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord,
    and trouble came to Moses because of them;

33  for they rebelled against the Spirit of God,
    and rash words came from Moses’ lips.[c]

34  They did not destroy the peoples
    as the Lord had commanded them,

35  but they mingled with the nations
    and adopted their customs.

36  They worshiped their idols,
    which became a snare to them.

37  They sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to false gods.

38  They shed innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was desecrated by their blood.

39  They defiled themselves by what they did;
    by their deeds they prostituted themselves.

40  Therefore the Lord was angry with his people
    and abhorred his inheritance.

41  He gave them into the hands of the nations,
    and their foes ruled over them.

42  Their enemies oppressed them
    and subjected them to their power.

43  Many times he delivered them,
    but they were bent on rebellion
    and they wasted away in their sin.

44  Yet he took note of their distress
    when he heard their cry;

45  for their sake he remembered his covenant
    and out of his great love he relented.

46  He caused all who held them captive
    to show them mercy.

47  Save us, Lord our God,
    and gather us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.

48  Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In 1978, I waited in the rain for two hours at the Charles Street Cinema (Near Mass General Hospital) to see a new movie called Star Wars. I loved it. Years later it came out on DVD and I watched it again. but there was something weird about the barroom scene. I remembered that Han Solo fired his gun FIRST (not in self-defense) and that Jabba-the-Hutt was not in the movie until the sequel. Yet, the action was different in the bar scene, and Jabba showed up too. What happened? Was my memory faulty? No my memory was fine. It was a CGI updating to make the film more "Politically Correct".

Faithful readers of this Thread know that I have been struggling with a new computer for several weeks. It's great to be rid of the pop-ups and other glitches that were plaguing my Beloved Old Mac Mini, but I have not yet plumbed the depths of retaining "Creative Control" on my new set-up. It does too many things automatically! One of the things that was driving me nuts was "Autocorrect". Just like the wicked "Autotune" in Audio Recording, the "Autocorrect" was changing the spelling of my words, and sometimes substituting a totally different word in its place. Since I am of a certain age, I was actually taught grammar and spelling in Public School, and I know the difference between "Their, They're, and There." Autocorrect does not, it seems, as it would substitute the wrong word without my seeing it happen, thus exposing me to the Grammar and Spelling Police who prowl FR seeking whom they may devour.

What opened my eyes to this phenomenon was when I tried to write the word "FReeper". This is, of course, a bit of local jargon for those of us on Free Republic, and has been in use since the mid-nineties. Evidently, Apple has never heard of "FReepers" (maybe that's a GOOD thing!) and changed all my FRee words to "freezer". The software did this WITHOUT notification, and made for some very stupid posts. One of our beloved FReepers (Hebrews 11:6) suggested that I go into "System Preferences" and turn OFF "Autocorrect". He wasn't sure if it would work on a Mac, because he is a PC (DEFINITELY NOT Politically Correct!) guy. Sure enough, I went into the System Preferences tab and there it was. I pressed the OFF button, and now I can express myself without being misquoted or ridiculed. I also noted on the page that the Mac was inserting periods after very double breaks in HTML. (I use double breaks ALL the time in setting up the thread.) This resulted in choppy, goofy, sentence fragments that were making my Thread hard to read. I turned that OFF too. There may be more things I will have to correct as time goes by. One of the weirdest thing is that the transfer of data turned all my Code into "Rich Text" which works differently from HTML. So, every morning I have to Tweak the thread to make it look like its old familiar self. Thank you all for your patience!

Once again, I seem to be ranting. But it is important to see what electronics can do to the written Word. Those of us, who have committed large amounts of Scripture to Memory, will find ourselves struggling with new translations of the Bible. It may be something as simple as the update of an old Elizabethan word whose meaning has changed. An example would be "Suffer the Children to come unto Me."(KJV). "Suffer", in 1611, meant "ALLOW". But "Suffer" means something totally different now. And so, that word substitution is OK. It was not "Autocorrect", but a careful, prayerful decision made by scholars who were looking at the original Greek texts.

On the other hand, the wholesale substitution of gender-neutral pronouns for God is a whole different matter! While I don't ascribe sexual characteristics to Almighty Transcendant God, He has CHOSEN, in His Sovereignty, to reveal Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If that is the way he wishes to identify Himself, who are we to argue? And yet, if all we have is electronic media to read His Word, how are we to know the difference?

My friend Maria was born, raised, and educated in Omsk, Siberia, so she knows a bit about government censorship. She should be a FReeper because she believes the way we do. The other day she said to me:

"I LOVE Books! I love the way they smell, the sound of the pages turning, the weight of them in my hands!"

I agreed and added that they can't be changed without the change being obvious to the reader. Even if you have the latest electronics, don't throw your books away!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

You rang? Well, as long as I’m here anyway, I suppose it wouldn’t kill me—and if it does, I’ll just go to be with my Lord, so there’s absolutely no downside to this—as I say, it wouldn’t kill me to add my “AMEN!” here, so I do, without any AUTOCORRECTion at all.
