UC Regents Tighten Their Rules on Deals with Catholic Hospitals

The University of California Board of Regents on Wednesday tightened UC’s rules on affiliations with hospitals that impose religious restrictions on care.

The policy approved almost unanimously by the board places greater limits than before on interference by religious authorities with the medical judgments of UC physicians practicing at sectarian hospitals.

The policy states that UC physicians practicing at a sectarian hospital must be permitted to provide any treatment at that location to a patient who can’t be safely transferred to another facility — even if the treatment would violate religious restrictions. Affiliated hospitals will have until Dec. 31, 2023, to comply with the policy, or the affiliation agreement must be canceled.

“We know that transfers are not always in the patient’s interest,” board Chair John A. Pérez, who crafted the key language approved by the board, said after the board’s meeting, conducted remotely Wednesday afternoon.

States telling private hospitals, built with private dollars and supported for a religious mission on whom and how they serve.

Four things a Catholic Hospital won’t do.

Abortions.

Euthanasia.

Sex changes.

Non-therapeutic sterilization (for the purpose of birth control)

The odds of any of these being emergencies where the patient could not be safely transferred to another hospital would have to be astronomical.

Anti-life medical “ethics” only.

I’m sorry, but no truly (or even partly) Catholic hospital can ever agree to let UC doctors perform abortions etc. in their facilities. This rule will effectively, ahem, terminate UC’s deals with Catholic hospitals. And, frankly, that’s fine. Catholic hospitals shouldn’t be in bed with these people in the first place.

Get rid of all uc physicians from hospital when they don’t follow hospital policies or are a detriment to hospital.. Plenty more of m.d.s to more than replace. Let the compliant hospitals go broke having to provide services for practice of uc docs.
They got 2.5 years to do it.
UC has a moribund teaching concept anyway. UC size and influence is ripe for decimation.

Euthanasia is a good example. Try to imagine this blurb in the local paper.

John Doe lost his life at St. Elmoe’s Catholic Hospital Tuesday morning, where due to their religious restrictions, they were prevented from performing euthanizing procedures upon him while he was convalescing in their care.

OH! The huge manatees.
