PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 6/18/2021
King James Bible | 6/18/2021 | pilgrimsprogress

“A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled” (Proverbs 18:20).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled” (Proverbs 18:20).

Now, what that is saying, in part anyway, is that we ought to be satisfied with what we say. A lot of things could be done better; but it says there that, “A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth.”

“A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him” (Proverbs 12:14).

So, there is a lot that comes back to you because of what you said. Now, you know what you ought to make sure you do? There is a lot you should be concentrating on, making sure that the words that come out of your mouth are pleasant words that God can use. Words that God can bless. This is not talking about just pleasant friendly words as such; but that which is pleasant to the Holy Spirit. Right?

“A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence” (Proverbs 13:2).

Do you have a violent homelife? This does not necessarily mean domestic abuse; but there is a lot of verbal friction, a lot of going back and forth in anger. We probably all know of a home somewhere where mom and dad were constantly pricking each other with sharp words and always egging the other on. Dad is always talking about mom this way and that way, and she's basically disrespecting him. If that is the way that your home is, it says there that what you should do is change your words, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).

“The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly” (Proverbs 18:8).

So, somebody that is a talebearer is a busy body, which eventually the gossip gets gossiped about. How are you helped by that?

“A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it” (Proverbs 15:23).

Who all do you talk to during the day? How often do you have an opportunity to speak for Jesus Christ? A word of testimony at some family gathering. Do they ask you to pray at Thanksgiving? That is a great time to get a word in. Right? For example, “Lord, as we thank You for Your great love toward us and Your gift of eternal life which You provided at the cross, we now thank You for this great bounty which you have provided . . .” It does not need to be the complete Romans Road plan of salvation, but a simple mention of eternal life may be more than you’ll get to say for the rest of the day. It is a seed. Plant it and let someone else water it, if you cannot do so yourself.

“A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.”

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
