“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10).
No one can say that they have understanding unless they have knowledge of the holy. All wisdom is just trivial if you don't know how it relates to God. If you take wisdom and don't relate it morally, there's no moral relation; if you take knowledge and there's no moral issue to knowledge, then it is mere worldly wisdom. I'll grant you that it doesn't look like 2 + 2 is a moral issue, and maybe in some ways it's not; but in the end, the things that we know and the things that we understand (if they're not related to our morality), then you missed the point and it says there that “the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
“The knowledge of the holy is understanding,” so if you are a Christian and you are not in pursuit of the holiness of God, then you don't understand. You can’t understand.
“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).
You’ll find that Job 28:28 is the only place in the word of God that tells you what understanding is. So, you go ahead and get your 4-year degree, and then get your Masters, and wind up with a couple of doctorates and if you have no knowledge of the holy; and if whatever knowledge you did get did not teach you to depart from evil, you may have gotten education but you didn't get any understanding.
Proverbs 17:27 says that “a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.” Have you ever met somebody that didn't have an excellent spirit? They were cantankerous, you couldn’t talk to them, they were like a porcupine, and just had a bulldog’s personality. They didn't have an excellent spirit. They weren't patient. They had no tenderness. They were not concerned. They were self-consumed. They were just bitter, malicious, and malignant. Did you ever meet somebody like that? They don't have any understanding. The Bible says that “a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit,” alright?
