“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end . . . The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar” (Proverbs 19:20, 22).
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction,” hear the Gospel: “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Receive the Word: “Receive the engrafted Word which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). Receive Christ: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).
“. . . that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end,” you want to go to heaven, don’t you? Know where you are going to go when you die.
Of course, I’m applying this verse to those of us living today, as for the Old Testament saint—he’d hear the Law and receive it—and he would be wise in his latter end.
“The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.”
“The desire of a man is his kindness,” if a man’s motives are right, then what he does is right. You know, some people can be kind to you, but their motive is wrong—take a used car salesman. His desire to sell you a car produces an outward façade and a fake attitude. That is not genuine kindness. Real kindness comes from the right desire, to be a help to another.
“. . . and a poor man is better than a liar,” if you have to lie, cheat, and steal in order to make a living, it is far better to stay home and be poor than to sell your reputation.
