“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins" (Proverbs 5:21-22).
People have this terrible habit of thinking that they can quit anytime they want to, and to a point that is true; but if you underestimate the power and deceitfulness of sin, you are a naive soul just like those of a 1000 generations before you.
It says, “His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins,” this may come across as a cliché because it said so often, but sin is binding. The worst part of sin is not necessarily the nicotine addiction, or the alcohol addiction, or the drug addiction; almost in every case the worst part of it is the addiction of your mind. It’s the thought processes by which your heart is set on those things and you go deeper and deeper and deeper into them.
When somebody says they have a gambling addiction, it's not an addiction. There is a nicotine addiction. You should still quit, but one can understand that there is an issue with the flesh crying out for more. When somebody takes a hit of the right kind of drug, they may be stuck for life of they don't take radical procedures to beat it, but when somebody says they have a gambling addiction, no! No, you have a character problem. It has nothing to do with your body. It has to do with where your heart is set, and you won't set it somewhere else.
Someone will say that they have an addiction to pornography. Nuts to that! Now, sin is binding, I’ll grant you that, but if you continue to go down the road it will lead to something else; but it's not addictive. It’s not genetic like folks are trying to make it into these days.
One wonders how a man like John Couey became a sex criminal. Was it pornographic magazines? evil videos? dirty rap music? cable sex movies? Was it the letdown in modesty, the flaunting of nakedness in public these days?
Before sex-strangler Ted Bundy was executed, he admitted his addiction to porn. So why do we tolerate porn in books, music and films? All the more reason why the ACLU and other destroyers of righteousness need to be put in their place!
