The American Bishops are actually talking about enforcement of morality on Catholics in the public sphere. This is huge!
I doubt the Archbishop went into this without any discussion among the other Bishops in the USCCB. Could this represent a particular change in the culture of the episcopate in the USA?
There was a group discussion. Last fall, the US bishops formed a temporary working group to figure out what to do about this very issue.
Cordileone has been one of the stronger figures in the Church today. The USCCB as a body is compromised and will not act.
