#25, the masterpiece of Benozzo Gozzoli, a fresco cycle covering the walls of the chapel of the Medici Palazzo in Florence. The procession of the Magi was a favorite subject of the Medici family. Gozzoli covered the four walls of the windowless chapel with fairytale landscapes, animals, figures and fabrics. He experimented with bright colors, gold and ultramarine which were of high cost to the Medici. It is a breathtaking vision of the vitality, wealth and diversity of the Florentine Renaissance.
The realism in Tissot’s Journey of the Magi is striking, the very rich color variations of the desert and mountains, the regal figures of the Magi, the animals, the light and shadows contribute to make this painting a masterpiece.
Thanks for adding the capital from St. Lazare Cathedral, a very special example of Romanesque art, a favorite of mine.
You’ve commented and educated us admirably about the first three images above. When may we expect similar treatment of the other thirty-nine? Let’s go, girl!
