Another way this question is asked is whether or not people born before Jesus can even be saved, and if so, how?

Research “Harrowing of Hell”.
It is a speculation of what Jesus was doing between the crucifixion and the resurrection.

God transcends time and so does the sacrifice of Christ. We were told Abraham believed and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Another way this question is asked is whether or not people born before Jesus can even be saved, and if so, how? We know some were saved because the Apostles saw Moses and Elijah with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. As for Purgatory, Moses and Elijah were not in Hell and Christ had not yet opened the Gates of Heaven, so where would they have been since they died?
