Global??? That word sends chills up my spine. Anyway, I wish them the best. The United Methodist church council (or whatever it is referred as) disbanded an over 100 year old country church in our area about 10 years ago. The church had just been remodeled. . .all expenses by congregants (even the property and initial building were congregant supported) . The church did not want to go along with the United Methodist doctrine. One of the head council members upon closing the church said he would rather see it as a coon hunter’s barn than continue the church. It was very sad. The church folded since the Methodists owned their property even though it was fully supported by the locals. There are others in the area as well who have been afraid to buck the system for fear of losing their buildings and property.
My understanding is that the Protocal for the separation of the UMC conveys all church properties (land and building) to the local congregations that vote to leave the UMC. This was stated in a meeting of our local congregation with the regional bishop over a year ago, but things may have changed since then.
The majority of the membership will likely be in Africa. They'll probably be sending Christian missionaries to America.
