I cannot even begin describing how much easier and more fun it is to illustrate the New Testament than the Old.
He told his biographer he considered it his "best" work, although its sequel was his "favorite."
Gaugin was a spiritual but not a religious man, and he did several paintings of a religious theme. Rare among the late 19th c. artists. Very touching is his vision after the Sermon (Jacob wrestling the Angel).
Thanks, Maudeen!
Yesterday, I was illustrating John's imprisonment when I had a nice epiphany. The Bible makes clear that, when John was jailed, then Jesus picked up and carried on John's call to repentance. Watch:
Mark 1: "14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”"
Matthew 4: "12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum...
"17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”"
Truly, John prepared the way for the Lord. When his preaching ended, Jesus' preaching began.
Love it as I love all his work.
I Didn’t know Gauguin had dome a painting on this theme. And I have seen a lot of his paintings.
Ya learn something new every day!
Some of us (you and me, mostly me) have more to learn than others (etabeta).
Well, every day we learn from each other, we are all students and teachers. I have a lot to learn from you two...
Friends and brethren for all eternity.
Delightful assortment. I particularly like the variety of birth scenarios the artists depict. Some have wet nurses, mid-wives, tubs of water, & etc. I like the naming pictures, for that is when Zacharias wrote ‘His name is John’ and his muteness ended. He then launched into a great prophecy.
“If John was the reincarnation of Elijah, and Jesus basically said so, then who are the Two Witnesses of Revelation? One must be Enoch.....................”
1. No such thing as reincarnation in the Bible. The Elijah to come was a person in the spirit and power of Elijah, which was John the Baptist at Jesus’ first coming. There will probably be another before Jesus 2nd coming.
2. I’ve always assumed the two witnesses were contemporary Christians called to that end-time work in the spirit of Elijah. I’m not sure where this theory comes from that they’ll be Moses and Elijah resurrected. There is no such indication in the Bible.
“This was my very first Gaugin.”
Yes, it really jumped out at me in its use of Polynesian women for the scene. I liked that.
I completely missed the hint of the manger scene. I was focused on the women.
“And John specifically denied being Elijah. To me, the leading candidates are, chronologically, Enoch, Moses and Elijah.”
And Jesus specifically identified him as fulfilling that prophecy.
Matthew 11:14
And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.
Matthew 17:12
And I tell you that Elijah has already come. Yet they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.”
I’ll take Jesus’ word over John the Baptist’s self-opinion.
What, circumlocution and circumspection about the circumcision pictures?
I agree fully that John came in the spirit and power of Elijah—thought that was obvious.
