Diocese: Priest’s Omission of Palm Blessing in Protest over Vatican Ruling ‘Reprehensible’

50-year-old Fr. Mignani, pastor of Santa Caterina Parish in Bonassola, said during his homily March 28, “if I can’t bless same-sex couples, then I won’t bless palms and olive branches either."

ROME — A Catholic diocese in Italy has described a priest’s refusal to bless palms on Sunday because of the Vatican’s rejection of blessings for same-sex unions as “reprehensible.”

The Diocese of Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato said that the matter was being addressed according to Church norms.

Fr. Giulio Mignani, a priest in the north-western Italian diocese, made headlines after he refused to bless palm branches at a Palm Sunday Mass in protest of the Vatican’s document clarifying that the Catholic Church does not have the power to bless same-sex unions.

Sounds like a man who needs to go and find himself another line of work.

According to Italian media, Fr. Mignani has a history of public actions in support of same-sex unions, including attending the civil union of two men in his town in 2016.

Referring to that event, Fr. Mignani told Il Corriere della Sera this week that “I have a public role and I wanted to say, ‘I’m with them.’”

WTF?!

That’s outright sacrilege.

I can at least understand Democrats acting like communists because they don’t believe in anything else. They’re wrong - but they’re at least practicing their ideology.

THIS GUY?! Hurr Durr- I don’t care what God or the Bible sez or even understand Jesus’ procession into the town or why we even celebrate Palm Sunday - I mean... that’s just when everybody gave Jesus palms, right? It’s just more capitalism when we have real problems right now where gay people can’t have their anal sex recognized as good and noble by the church.

Defrock the guy immediately. I’m sure the good cardinal hasn’t even upheld his celibacy oath either.

These guys will never be honest and leave the Church. They are just here to destroy it.

I think it sad that Catholics sit and wait while a bunch of mortal Cardinals VOTE on who is to be the next pope. An elected man who through internal politics and personal preferences all of a sudden supposedly has the ear of God. Nonsense to me.

I'm no historian, but it seems like the Popes/Vatican has been corrupt from it's beginning. I feel bad for those who are losing faith in the Church as I recently talked with a woman who has on this site.

There are fewer guarantees than you would think regarding the papacy, and there were never any guarantees that the Pope would be perfect, or even pious.

Anyone losing faith in the Church unfortunately never understood the words of Christ to Peter regarding his (and his successors') role.

More preaching to me when I can clearly see the Catholic Church is political and won't address it's own sins, not mention crimes. Please stop. I've had enough that I'm a sinner and won't be forgiven if I don't say "Forgive Me" out loud. I'm fed up with this nonsense. A biblical god knows what is in my heart.

I'm a good man who subscribes to Judeo/Christian ethics and values. I refuse to worship something I don't know exists. Believe what you will as will I.

I simply responded to your maligning of the Catholic Church; for you to turn around and say, "Please stop" in response to my comments is simply childish.

Let your criticism of the Church be more rational than emotional and you'll feel less offended by those who defend it.

You don't appear to be one with your constant attacks on the One, True Church founded by Jesus Christ.

Sounds like a blessing from Fr. Mignani is about equivalent to a blessing from Balaam.

"You don't appear to be one with your constant attacks on the One, True Church founded by Jesus Christ."

You don't know me. I have explained my position about religions and God many times on this site. Because I have problems with the now political Catholic religion, I can't be a good man? End.

What was political about this thread that caused you to attack the Church founded by Christ?

Biden and Bergoglio are not “the Catholic Church”.

I said END. Why can't you accept that, you f#cking blind religious fanatic? You are the type that turns off us who are looking for true logical spiritual answers.

Screw the Catholic church and their corruption. I'd rather hang around a southern Baptist church who sing in joy and whose direction is toward Jesus and not some big organization that he supposedly created which I don't believe.

LEAVE ME ALONE if you only want to question my morality.

"Let your criticism of the Church be more rational"

I really need to itemize the failings of the Catholic church which are numerous and not emotional but factual? END, which means don't bother me anymore. Have your beliefs and live in peace, I have mine.
