Freedom is given to us by God. Marriage was ‘invented’ without God. So do we go with our freedom or what the Vatican says? I do believe the Vatican is people.
There is a difference between free will and license. God gives us the free will to choose good or evil, but that does not mean the choices we make will not have consequences.

But a quick historical review. Marriage used to be the provenance of the church. Napoleonic law in the early 1800’s took it away from the church and put it under the control of the state.
So for worldly people. the RC position means nothing except an irritation that they will eventually get rid of.
