Catholic School Enrollment Sees Sharpest Drop in Nearly 50 Years

Washington D.C., Feb 8, 2021 / 02:30 pm MT (CNA).- Enrollment at Catholic schools this academic year has seen its largest drop in nearly half a century, according to a new report.

A data brief of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) showed that enrollment at Catholic schools was down 6.4% for the 2020-2021 school year—the biggest percentage drop in enrollment since 1973.

The overall number of students at Catholic schools declined by more than 110,000 for the present academic year, and more than 200 schools closed after the previous school year; these figures were included in the NCEA’s report “Catholic School Enrollment and School Closures, Post-COVID-19,” published on Feb. 8.

A large share of this decline was due to enrollment attrition at pre-Kindergarten schools.

“Of the net loss of 111,000 students to Catholic schools from 2019-2020 to 2020-2021, 40% of that loss can be attributed to Pre-Kindergarten related enrollment attrition,” the NCEA said. “This mirrors similar losses in public school preschool and Kindergarten enrollment.”

Pre-k is where a lot of those Catholic school pad their enrollment.

When one parent gets fired they have one who will stay home to take care of the kids and less income incentive to put that Child through daycare.

American Maoists want very much to shut down all Catholic schools...AND...Catholic hospitals. No more students hearing "homosexual acts are sinful" and no more selfish women hearing "no,we don't preform abortions here".

Just read an article about Catholic schools and institutions getting PP money.

People were poo pooing the Bishops for applying for it. But that literally kept many of those schools from shutting down last year.

I dont see it as a problem. Catholic school aint for everybody. MY brother’s parish and school, there is a 3-YEAR wait-time due to the many parents wanting to get their kids into the school. NO woke teachers at all, probably why and totally private. My nephew and niece were recent grads.

One of the prerequisites for acceptance is that the parents HAVE to participate in...bingo nights, for extra funds and MANDATORY. Instead of hiring staff for events such as school trips, the parents do it for the school and they get a discount on the tuition. So every 2 Saturday nights, you have parents manning the booths, security, food etc.

One boys high school near us had record enrollment, from students and parents who were tired of public school lockdowns.

The local Catholic elementary school wanted over $25,000 plus paying out-of-pocket for speech, occupational and physical therapy. The total cost each year would be greater than going out of state to a decent out of state college such as University of Indiana or Kentucky or even some Catholic universities. Granted the is special eduction for disabled children, but is just too much.

How well connected are these schools to Catholic charities that are part of the refugee resettlement programs?

All the private schools in our very un-churched area of the SF Bay Area, including very conservative Evangelical Christian schools and conservative Catholic schools, are all full with wait lists.

It’s because they are open while public schools remain closed. Atheist parents are desperate enough that they will allow their kids to get daily Bible classes and weekly chapel or mass!

It’s hilarious to me. This is a great opportunity for Christianity and outreach actually.

(I was one parent who moved my teens to private Christian school, and homeschooling.)

With a Pontiff who does not appear to even be Christian, why bother?

“With a Pontiff who does not appear to even be Christian, why bother?”

Bergoglio is not pope. The only thing to do is stay Catholic, pray, and wait.

Franky may be eager to tread the bishops’ skulls that pave the streets of Hell, but I am determined not to follow him there.

Everyone needs to read the article. It is not about Catholic Schools per say. It is a trend in ALL schooling.

This mirrors public school education trends.

We have NO CHILDREN. We are not reproducing at replacement rate. We should be incentivizing couples to marry & have children. Lots of them. We should be doing everything possible to get married couples to have 3 or more children. This is the stabilizing aspect of society.

It has a lot more to do with low birth rates. No one is having children, at least not enough of them.

Due to massive school debt & lack of good jobs, many young people are putting off marriage & children well into their thirties.

Getting pregnant is a young woman's game, literally. It is much more difficult to get pregnant after 30 & even more so after 35. It is all but impossible after 40 without medical help & more serious birth defects happen after forty.

As society continues to downplay the importance of women as mothers, instead making the idea that being a mid level manager at a company is more full filling than marriage & children. We will continue to see these declines.

As a society we should be championing marriage & family formation. We should incentive them. Even have direct payment for 3rd & 4th children as well as substantial tax deductions for children, particularly 3rd children & beyond.

My kids went to Catholic school but, as long as this Pope is in the vatican I would never send another child.
