Sometimes I worry that by questioning the way God took certain actions, the way he did according to scripture .. I worry that I may be on the thin line between wanting answers to these questions or actual blasphemy!?
One of my most nagging questions and one that seems to have no rational (or scriptural) explanation is "why did Jesus have to be tortured and slaughtered like he was?"
Why the carrying and dragging of the heavy beams of the cross?
That effort was so cruel that he fell many times on the way to where he would be impaled!
Why the spikes through hands and feet?
Why the vinegar? (offered for his thirst!)
Why the piercing by the sword? (I know it was to see if he was really dead. By that action it seems that it was done not knowing or caring if he was actually dead!)
Sure, I know that there are some who will tell us that it was the fulfillment of scriptural prophesy!
But that doesn't really answer my real question!
If God can do ANYTHING .. why couldn't he have made it somewhat easier on his son?
Seriously, God is the one demanding a sacrifice of blood for mankind's redemption but I don't see anywhere the NEED for torture?
Heck the old testament has sacrifices of lambs that foretold the coming sacrifice of Jesus. (the real lamb of God)
Nowhere do I see where any of the four legged animals were tortured before being sacrificed?
That sounds more like a liberal point of view. Why should I have to work to get paid? Why should I study to pass a test - isn’t there an easier way to learn” Why? Why, Mommy? Why?
Perhaps God’s message was about personal responsibility and to demonstrate a bit of what we would deserve if we cold not accept His gift of redemption bey having His Son tortured and killed at the hands of sinners that sinners might be saved.
If life was supposed to be easy, then we wouldn’t have so many Snowflakes.
You could say answering your question is the whole purpose of Rutledge’s book, but it is a classic now on the level with John Stott’s THE CROSS OF CHRIST and a must read for all who serve the Lord in any type of ministry.
I have little experience when it comes to posting and I don’t know how to thank everyone for your responses other than individually?
I’m afraid that that would become robotic sounding after the first ten or so “Thank Yous” so I’m hoping that this post will be an appropriate way to do so?
“Thank You Everyone” for your thoughts and responses!
