BAGHDEDE, Iraq — After much effort and work, the statue of the Virgin Mary was raised on the tower of Tahira Church in Baghdede (Qaraqosh) in Nineveh Plains in northern Iraq. The four-meter-long statue is made of plaster and is the work of sculptor Thabet Mikhail.
Tahira Church is one of the largest churches in Iraq, opened in 1948 after a popular effort by the people of Baghdede over a 16-year period. The church was completely destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) and is currently being reconstructed.
The tower of the church is the tallest and most ornate building in Baghdede and became a symbol of the town.

I take it she posed for the sculptor, or the sculptor had a genuine photogragh to work from.
God wins.

1. Mary Immaculate, Star of the Morning, Chosen before the cre- ation began, Chosen to bring, in the light of thy dawning, Woe to the serpent and rescue to man: | 2. Here in an orbit of shadow and sadness, Veiling thy splendor, thy course thou hast run; Now thou art throned in all glory and gladness, Crowned by the hand of thy Saviour and Son. |
3. Sinners, we worship thy sinless perfection; Fallen and weak, for thy pity we plead; Grant us the shield of thy sov’reign protection; Measure thine aid by the depth_ of our need. | 4. Frail is our nature and strict our probation, Watchful the foe that would lure us to wrong; Succor our souls in the hour of temptation, Mary Immaculate, ten_-der and strong. |
5. See how the wiles of the serpent assail us, See how we waiver and flinch in the fight: Let thine immaculate merit avail us, Make of our weakness a proof_ of thy might. | 6. Bend from thy throne at the note of our crying, Bend to this earth which thy footsteps have trod: Stretch out thine arms to us living and dying, Mary Immaculate Mo_-ther of God. |
I love it. What Isis destroyed God restored.
Be respectful of Jesus’ mother.
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments" (Exodus 20:4,5 AV).
======
"Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God" (Deuteronomy 4:23,24 AV).
**So these faithful have lived through beheadings and forced conversions, and your only comment is punk remark about Biblical images?**
And when those folks were calling on God, any “graven by art and man’s device” object (re: Paul to the Athenians) was unable to relay the requests to God; which is unnecessary anyway, since God is “not far from every one of us” (Paul to the Athenians again).
When the seeker diligently seeks God, the seeker needs no man made device to reach Him. God only asks the sincere soul to ask in the name of Jesus.
And God needs help from no one, no matter the circumstances.
Even for those whose spirit is alive to Jehovah,
"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:" (Psalm 66:18 AV),then how much more so for the heathen whose god is not the God of the Bible?
