Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Job 1

Prologue

1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

6 One day the angels[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
    and naked I will depart.[c]
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
    may the name of the Lord be praised.”

22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Footnotes

1. Job 1:6 Hebrew the sons of God
2. Job 1:6 Hebrew satan means adversary.
3. Job 1:21 Or will return there

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

We will not be reading the entire Book of Job this time around, but only the parts that pertain to our Topic of Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds. From this story, we can see how this was a measurement of Job's wealth.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the Beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!
LORD, remind us ALWAYS to Worship You,
and not Your Creation.
Your creation is there but to proclaim YOUR GLORY.
Hallelujah and Amen.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Once again, I am posting Sunday's thread the night before, due to the fact that I will be playing piano for two services tomorrow morning, and have to be there before 8:00AM. So, in true Bible Tradition, Sunday Morning starts Tonight!

Daddy used to tell me sea stories about his years in the United States Navy during WW2 and Korea. He used to say, "Name a place in the Pacific. I've probably been there."

I, being a smart-aleck, said, "Zamboanga?"

"Been there." said Dad.

Tahiti?"

"Been there too," he said.

"OK," I asked. "How about The Island of Yap?"

"Oh yes," said Dad. "The women didn't wear any tops and their money was made of STONE! The money was so big you couldn't move it!"

Years later, I searched for The Island of Yap on the Internet. And, sure enough, there it was, complete with topless native girls and stone money. I thought he was making it up! But he had been telling the truth all along.

The bigger the stone money was, the more it was worth. Some "denominations" were the size of boulders. It was the strangest thing I had ever seen, this stone money. How could you exchange it? Why was one rock worth more than another? It seems that the one who "owned" the biggest rocks was considered "wealthy", but he really didn't have anything better than his fellow Islanders. But that's the way "Wealth" is determined on The Island of Yap.

We will not be going through the entire Book of Job...Just the Prologue and the Epilogue. The reason is that these two portions are a frame for all the rest of the book. The Prologue establishes Job as a very Blessed and Wealthy man. His wealth is measured in flocks and herds of livestock, which was the standard of the day. The whole Book is about how Job's simple faith in God is challenged, first by Satan himself, then by Job's nagging wife, then his philosophizing "friends" who try to convince Job that everything is his fault, then a youth who gives everybody a hard time, and, finally by God Himself. Job is a tough book to get through, because there are some people in it you just want to slap. We won't be going through it all this time, but perhaps will someday. Today's story is to show that wealth is measured differently in different cultures. Unlike the Stone Money of The Island of Yap, Job's wealth was measured in living, breathing, vulnerable creatures. Even his family, another source of prosperity and wealth, could be snuffed out in an instant. Indeed, the Stone Money was more permanent, but but was really just symbolic. Job's property was less permanent, but actually could be fruitful and multiply, or be lost in an instant. Which is EXACTLY what happened.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

I think they may have a live stream here. Better go to the 11:00 service because we have only had ONE rehearsal. (((YIKES)))

So, by the second service we will have had TWO, if you count the 9:00AM as a sort of “dress” rehearsal.

There is also a (you should pardon the expression) Facebook page.

Seriously, I’m a little unnerved playing with just one rehearsal, and I didn’t even know the songs. But I am trusting in the Lord that it will all be to HIS Glory!

LOL! Ain't that the truth. I can "Amen" that, for sure. Job's "friends" come up Sun/Mon on my series. Slapping is too good for them. BTW, I stuck to the beginning and the end, too.

Amen...I’m all dressed and ready to go. But first...I have to walk Penny and have some COFFEE!

PS, if the congregation seems small, it’s because of covid. We had to take out the pews, spread a few chairs around and go to two services.

Psalm 132

A Song of Ascents.

1 O Lord, remember in David’s favour
all the hardships he endured;
2 how he swore to the Lord
and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,
3 ‘I will not enter my house
or get into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to my eyes
or slumber to my eyelids,
5 until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling-place for the Mighty One of Jacob.’

6 We heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found it in the fields of Jaar.
7 ‘Let us go to his dwelling-place;
let us worship at his footstool.’

8 Rise up, O Lord, and go to your resting-place,
you and the ark of your might.
9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and let your faithful shout for joy.
10 For your servant David’s sake
do not turn away the face of your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore to David a sure oath
from which he will not turn back:
‘One of the sons of your body
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my decrees that I shall teach them,
their sons also, for evermore,
shall sit on your throne.’

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his habitation:
14 ‘This is my resting-place for ever;
here I will reside, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly bless its provisions;
I will satisfy its poor with bread.
16 Its priests I will clothe with salvation,
and its faithful will shout for joy.
17 There I will cause a horn to sprout up for David;
I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one.
18 His enemies I will clothe with disgrace,
but on him, his crown will gleam.’
