Belfort: beaten up for having participated in a Christmas meal and being the son of police officers (France)

A 20-year-old Belfortain boy was beaten up by five individuals. The reason: this Muslim took part in a family Christmas dinner and is the son of police officers.

It is 3 p.m. this Friday, Nabil (*), 20, is at the table with his family in their new house in the inner suburb of Belfort. Happy to spend this time with his family, with his mother and his stepfather, both judicial police officers, he wants to share this festive time and takes a photo of the meal that he posts on his Snapchat account. On the picture, oysters and shrimps, nothing very extraordinary. But he did not expect the result.

One of his acquaintances from school and football sends him an inflammatory message. The individual says he is shocked to see Nabil celebrate Christmas when he is of Muslim faith. But the message does not end there. It is written in substance: “Dirty sons of whites, sons of snakes, sons of policemen”. And still in the same vein, the author of the message clearly threatens him to attack him and his parents, and to conclude as follows: "I'm going to show you what a real Arab is (jargon of the word beur, itself jargon of the Arabic word) ”, while continuing to insult him.

Young Nabil, shocked, does not understand and sends a message to his interlocutor for an explanation. He takes his car and joins the author of the message who had given him an appointment in Belfort.

On his arrival on site - a car park in the Mont district in Belfort, according to our colleagues from L'Est Républicain - he is expected by this acquaintance and four other individuals, who start hitting him and leave him on the ground, not without the 'Threatening the worst reprisals if he lodged a complaint or spoke about it.

The young man takes his car back to the family home, his face bleeding and his body covered with bruises. The rest is a visit to the Belfort police station with a complaint.

Identified, the author of the message presented himself spontaneously to the police station, where he was taken into custody. He would have explained, during his hearing, "to have been shocked to see that this acquaintance posted pictures of oysters and shrimps". And to justify his actions by explaining that “it is not Muslim to celebrate Christmas”. Two other people, unknown to the services, were also identified as having participated in this beating.

It will be up to the Public Prosecutor's Office to qualify the facts, and in particular to apply a legal analysis to the fact of being the target of violence because of his participation in a celebration with religious connotations, of being the son of a police officer or even to the fact. to have a white stepfather.

The mother of the family, stationed at the Mulhouse police station (her husband is an OPJ at the Belfort police station), says she is scandalized. “He fell into a trap. He is made to pay for his origins but above all for being the son of a couple of police officers. This is sectarian and racist behavior, it is unacceptable in the 21st century. We cannot tolerate these behaviors. Everyone is free to celebrate what they want and as they wish. Most importantly, no one has to pay for having parents who are police officers. This affair must not remain without follow-up… ”

Sur le cliché, des huîtres et des crevettes, rien de bien extraordinaire. Mais il ne s’attendait pas à la suite.

Une de ses connaissances de l’école et du foot lui envoie un message incendiaire. L'individu se dit choqué de voir Nabil fêter Noël alors qu’il est de confession musulmane. Mais le message ne s’arrête pas là. Il est écrit en substance : « Sale fils de blancs, fils de serpent, fils de policiers ». Et toujours dans la même veine, l’auteur du message le menace clairement de s’en prendre à lui et à ses parents, et de conclure ainsi : « Je vais te montrer ce qu’est un vrai rebeu (verlan du mot beur, lui-même verlan du mot arabe) », tout en continuant de l’insulter.

Le jeune Nabil, choqué, ne comprend pas et envoie un message à son interlocuteur pour avoir une explication. Il prend sa voiture et rejoint l’auteur du message qui lui avait donné rendez-vous sur Belfort.

Attendu sur son lieu de rendez-vous par cinq individus

À son arrivée sur place - un parking du quartier du Mont à Belfort, selon nos confrères de L'Est Républicain - il est attendu par cette connaissance et quatre autres individus, qui se mettent à le frapper et le laissent à terre, non sans l’avoir menacé des pires représailles s’il déposait plainte ou en parlait autour de lui.

Le jeune homme reprend sa voiture et rentre dans la maison familiale, le visage en sang et le corps couvert de contusions. La suite, c’est un passage au commissariat de Belfort avec un dépôt de plainte.

Identifié, l’auteur du message s'est présenté spontanément au commissariat, où il a été placé en garde à vue. Il aurait expliqué, au cours de son audition, « avoir été choqué de voir que cette connaissance a posté des photos d’huîtres et des crevettes ». Et de justifier ses gestes en expliquant que « ce n’est pas musulman de fêter Noël ». Deux autres personnes, inconnues des services, ont également été identifiées comme ayant participé à ce passage à tabac.

Il appartiendra au Parquet de qualifier les faits, et notamment d’appliquer une analyse juridique au fait d’être la cible de violences en raison de sa participation à une fête à connotation religieuse, au fait d’être fils de policier ou encore au fait d’avoir un beau-père blanc.

Une affaire qui ne doit pas rester sans suite

La mère de famille, en poste au commissariat de Mulhouse (son conjoint est, lui, OPJ au commissariat de Belfort), se dit scandalisée. « Il est tombé dans un guet-apens. On lui fait payer ses origines mais surtout le fait d’être le fils d’un couple de policiers. Ce sont des comportements sectaires et racistes, c’est inacceptable au XXIe siècle. On ne peut pas tolérer ces comportements. Chacun est libre de fêter ce qu’il veut et comme il l’entend. Et surtout, personne n’a à payer le fait d’avoir des parents qui sont fonctionnaires de police. Cette affaire ne doit pas rester sans suite… »

De son côté, l’UNSA Police estime que « ces faits sont extrêmement graves, surtout dans le climat actuel. Il n’est pas tolérable de désigner une personne à la vindicte populaire. On ne sait jamais jusqu’où cela peut aller. C’est du racisme… » Et le syndicat d’apporter tout son soutien à la victime et à sa famille.
