President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law by which the city of Dragomireşti in Maramureş County was declared a “martyr city” of the anti-communist struggle, the presidency announced on Nov. 13.
The Senate adopted the bill, as the first forum notified, on April 23, the Chamber of Deputies voted decisively on October 20.
“As a sign of homage to the members of the anti-communist resistance group in Ţibleş Mountains and as a relief for the descendants of those who fought against the atheist communist regime, the city of Dragomireşti, Maramureş County, is declared a Martyr City of the anti-communist struggle.”
The measures taken against the resistance group were harsh, with over 150 people arrested in Dragomireşti. Torment and years of imprisonment for those who opposed the communist regime followed.
Among the victims was Chiş Ion, a student of Orthodox Theology.
The bill refers to the “supreme price” paid by the Orthodox Monastery of Dragomireşti located in the Prihodiştii Valley, which was “set on fire by security troops disguised as peasants in winter clothes from Mara Valley, (completely different from the peasants clothing from Dragomireşti) on the night of 13 to 14 September 1949.”
“Only a censer and the Icon of the Mother of God with the Baby Jesus were recovered from the ashes, these two relics being the basis for the reconstruction at this moment of St. Elijah’s Monastery in Dragomireşti.”

The Romanian people lived for years under Ceausescu’s iron fist.
Then in December of 1989, they captured him and his witch of a wife and after an hour long trial the couple was charged with genocide and other crimes.
Minutes after their conviction, the Ceausescus were led outside and pumped full of lead on Christmas Day.
God bless the Freedom Fighters of Romania.
